Marica Perry sees the world with the eyes of a child and the wisdom of a sage. She consumes color with all of her senses, giving her a broader palette from which to promote a kinder, more compassionate world through art. Her work is bright, whimsical, emotional, and sometimes soft and ethereal. But always full of hope.

It was the motto, “Do Art. Be Kind” that laid the foundation for the Youth Arts Collective (YAC) in Monterey, a nonprofit organization Perry and her wife, artist Meg Biddle, founded in 2000 to help instill creativity, kindness, and confidence in teens, through art. Perry had already established herself as an artist, through the nuanced techniques of fine-art airbrushing marine and aviary, botanical and animal, and sometimes human imagery, all to celebrate the “spirit of wildness and the wildness of the spirit.”

Yet, for more than 20 years, Perry has focused just about every waking (and sleeping) moment primarily on the hundreds of kids they’ve brought up through YAC. Finally, the colorist has decided to share her inspirations and outcomes through “Rainbow Dance,” a solo art exhibit opening at Sylvan Gallery in Sand City on Jan. 8.
